Lighting Design: Dark Source
Photography: Dylan Parry Evans

Plas y Brenin is a National Outdoor Centre located in North Wales. The goal of Dark Source's environmentally conscious lighting design scheme, commissioned by Prosiect NOS and Eryri Snowdonia, was to reduce light pollution, energy waste and the negative impact on surrounding biodiversity.

A project focussed on the dark skies movement, “undoing light pollution” is tricky. In this case every existing light source needed to be refurbished. Upgrades were performed on existing bollards and solar powered PIR sensors were installed.

Stoane Lighting supplied Exterior LED Channel, Frog Type X and Pipien, our smallest exterior rated spot light. Exterior LED Channel, a simple design but highly effective and refurbishable IP66 linear product, can be seen downlighting in handrails, benches and signage.

The results of this considerate lighting design challenge are inspiring. So much so that the project featured on BBC Countryfile.

Kerem expands on the project in “Keeping Snowdonia Dark” in an issue of the ILP's Lighting Journal here: Lighting Journal July/August 2022.
