Connected by a footbridge, the island of Jørpelandsholmen in Norway was disused farmland before the municipality decided to tap into its recreational potential.

Now a 2.1km nature walk, that takes in Pulpit Rock (Norway’s Stonehenge), runs around the island. The sympathetic creation of the route was conceived by landscape architect Anita Ellefsen Hus. After the walk opened, the team at Light Bureau were approached to design a scheme that made the path safely navigable at night, whist reflecting the fact that it had been a formerly unlit island. We supplied Iris and Iris Type S fitted into bespoke bollards.

Strong emphasis in this award-winning scheme was given to maintaining as minimal an intervention as possible. In respect of the views outward across the fjord and in order to make the tail a magical experience by night, the restrained use of light has resulted in remarkably low power consumption. It is estimated that the lighting for the path 2.1 km path uses 575W in its dimmed state, less than 0.3W per meter.
