Eccleston Yards

With expert urban design by local practice Publica, their vision of making city spaces more integrated and vibrant by day and night was successfully realised in the renovation of Eccleston Yards in the heart of Belgravia, Central London.
Stoane Lighting were called upon to provide wall wash-lighting and subtle, yet essential highlights to signage with IP66 rated spotlights and to planters with exterior zoomable uplights. The centrepieces of our contribution are two custom-made lanterns positioned at either entrance of the Yards, which host hospitality businesses, outdoor seating, and events.
After Publica’s in-studio and on-site prototyping, and working within a tight brief, we co-designed and fabricated a stainless-steel frame with a cylindrical, copper finished core. The primary lighting element comes from a 2700K high output LED module with a narrow optic and an upward-facing reflective cone. Additional deep-recessed spots and strip lighting are discreetly integrated into the frame, providing edge illumination to the lantern glazing, which display the Yards’ logo.
Layered materials and regulation of the lighting elements provides agile control over the effect and impact that the two pendants have at different times. At dusk they appear as solid, backlit signage and as the night progresses, they become more transparent, revealing the warmth and gentle animation of the copper ‘mantle’ within. The larger of the two lanterns, measuring 1.4m in length, stands proudly above Eccleston Place, offering a warm welcome to enticed visitors, while the second, smaller lantern subtly marks the entrance on a residential street.
